From a very young age, women are raised to live up to unrealistic beauty standards put upon them by society. The standards vary from culture to culture and from one time period to the next.
In some cases, they are expected to be hairless all over their body, be slim with no tummy but still have a big butt. They might need to smell a certain way. Realistically, it is hard to live up to something so unobtainable especially starting at an age as early as three.
In this work, my goal was to construct a woman who was built out of standards from different times and cultures, a cubist mish-mash of beauty standards that are as unrealistic as the thinness of her body. She spins around to reveal an abstract form and later remerges to be gazed at once again. The collaged image serves to remind viewers that women are often raised to live up to unrealistic beauty standards put upon, which, in the end, has very negative effects on them.
